In the late 1800's, pictures in the posession of the South Side Historical Society show the building currently housing the Tally Ho Tavern, being used as a Library and Post Office. It was in the basement of this building that the Tally Ho began as a Speakeasy in the 1920's. Following the repeal of the Volstead Act (Prohibition) on December 5, 1933, James Goodin obtained one of the first liquor licenses issued in Northampton County. He then moved the legitimized Tally Ho to the first floor and the public eye. Mr. Goodin, while at the Chicago World's fair, obtained the first bar used in the Tally Ho.
Located one and one-half blocks from Lehigh University, the Tally Ho has been in continuous operation for 69 years as a tavern. It has been a Bethlehem institution and meeting place for Lehigh University students, faculty, and alumni. Likewise, the Tally Ho served in this capacity for the then-thriving Bethlehem Steel, and continues to serve St. Luke's Hospital and the city residents in general.
The present owners acquired the Tally Ho in 1984 and 1997, respectively. They proceeded to improve the three-story building and to expand the operation of the Tally Ho itself. The two stories above the ground level, formerly used as office space, were converted into 13 student apartments. An empty storage room at the east end of the Tally Ho was transformed into the cherry wood paneled Vixen Room. The Vixen Room was operated first as a restaurant. It currently operates as a game room with pool tables and a 56-inch wide screen television. The Tally Ho continued to expand with the acquisition of the one story building to the west, a former food cooperative. It is now the Hunt Room. The Hunt Room contains it's own bar, dance floor, sound and light system and restroom facilities, making it perfect for private parties. At night it is the place for our DJs and live bands.
In August of 2001, the Tally Ho christened its brand new 2nd story dining deck. It is our most popular new addition, featuring a full bar, seating for 50, and signature frozen drinks.
We sincerely hope you enjoy your visit with us and if there is anything we can do to make it more enjoyable, please don't hesitate to ask.
